PROBLEM
The fundamental right to make bodily decisions was about to be stripped away from millions of womxn across the country, and few Americans were even aware this change was coming. Polling conducted by Planned Parenthood in late 2021 showed that even among their own supporters, only 85% realized that Roe could end in the next calendar year.

GOAL
As the Supreme Court deliberated on the fate of Roe v Wade, Planned Parenthood wanted to visit red states across the country and drop a 10 foot neon sign on the front steps of their capitol buildings. They knew that if Roe ended, blue states would quickly enact their own protections. But in this campaign, they wanted to hear from womxn in red states whose lives would be directly impacted by a repeal of Roe.

APPROACH
Drive across the country  with our camera kit, van and trailer to produce a short piece following the guerrilla-style drops of the LED sign on state house steps, while also setting up a photo-booth style iPhone recording studio in our trailer to capture the stories of local women in each state.

RESULTS
Since we first offered our services to Planned Parenthood after the 2016 election, we’ve told over 30 different stories for them in states across the country. The fact that they trusted us to assemble the right team and cross the country with this giant neon sign – all while safely navigating a COVID variant, massive winter storms and  unfriendly protesters –  was an honor for us and a testament to our long standing partnership.

As a result of the larger Bans Off Our Bodies campaign that the neon sign was a part of, Planned Parenthood was able to raise awareness for the coming threat to Roe, adding over 130,000 new sign-ups to their email list.

SCALING UP FOR DAY OF ACTION
Five months later, the decision to repeal Roe leaked from the Supreme Court before it was officially announced. Planned Parenthood immediately jumped into action and organized over 100 rallies across the country on May 14, 2022.

We jumped into action again, this time not to cover five states in a month, but in just one day. On the national “Day of Action,” we assembled local crews in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Memphis, Austin and Ann Arbor to capture the activity at each rally.

We integrated Frame.io’s cutting edge core-to-cloud technology into each cinematographer’s camera so that all footage would automatically and immediately upload to our server as it was shot throughout the day. We scaled our post-production teams to ingest and edit the footage during the rallies, meeting our goal of immediately turning around over a dozen deliverables for Planned Parenthood to post on their social media channels less than 24 hours after the rallies.
